As your company grows and expands its sales footprint, the chances of being audited by a state taxing entity increase significantly. While sales tax audits in a business are fairly routine, they can still divert significant time and resources from a company’s normal daily activities. So, most of us would rather not have to deal with an audit, or if one is imminent, we’d like to get it handled as quickly and efficiently as possible. This course will focus on some sales and use tax basics like taxable presence (nexus), qualified exemptions, and sourcing of sales. We will also focus on acceptable documentation and things that companies can do today to mitigate both the chance of audit, and/or reduce the length of an audit. Finally, we’ll talk about tips in dealing with an audit, what a “typical” process might look like, and how to navigate the audit and communicate with the auditor.
